After graduating from Merced High School, Dwayne Murphy was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the first round of the 1973 amateur draft. He made his Major League Baseball debut in 1978 with the Athletics and played for them until 1987. During his career, he won six consecutive Gold Glove Awards for his excellent outfield play.
