Schell began her career as a stage actress in Vienna before making her film debut in 1942. She gained international recognition for her roles in the films "The Brothers Karamazov" (1958) and "The Hanging Tree" (1959). She also starred in several German films, including "Gervaise" (1956) and "The Heart of St. Pauli" (1957).

In 1933, she changed her stage name to Trude Marlen and had her breakthrough role in the film "Acht Mädels im Boot". She went on to star in numerous films throughout the 1930s and 1940s, becoming one of the most popular actresses in Germany and Austria.

After World War II, Marlen continued her successful acting career in both films and stage productions. She was also a popular television actress, appearing in several series in the 1960s and 1970s.
