He was a staunch advocate for the Flemish language and culture and was awarded numerous honors including the Order of Leopold II and the Knight of the Order of the Crown. Van Cottom appeared in more than 80 films during his acting career, which spanned more than 40 years. He was known for his versatility and ability to embody a wide range of characters, from comedic to dramatic roles. In addition to his acting work, Van Cottom was also an accomplished painter and sculptor. He was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1976 for his contributions to the arts.
