Buenaventura founded the first independent theater group in Colombia, "Teatro Experimental de Cali" in 1955, which later became "Teatro La Candelaria". He was the main director of the theater for several years and created many works that showcased his innovative style and experimentation with different theatrical techniques.

His plays are known for their social and political content, and he was an advocate for the incorporation of popular culture and traditional elements into theater. He wrote several renowned plays, such as "Los Papeles del Infierno", "El Intruso", and "La Maestra de Milagros".
