He began his acting career in the 1920s in Czechoslovakia and appeared in numerous films throughout his career, including the 1942 film "The Adventures of Tartu" and the 1956 film "The Man Who Knew Too Much". Štěpánek also had success on stage, appearing in productions in London's West End and on Broadway in New York City. During World War II, he joined the British Army and worked as a codebreaker, utilizing his language skills to intercept enemy transmissions. After the war, he continued to act and also worked on television, appearing in popular shows such as "The Avengers" and "Doctor Who".
