Jan Sviták

Jan Sviták (December 23, 1898 Pilsen-May 11, 1945 Prague) was a Czech film director and actor.

He began his career in the film industry as an actor, appearing in several Czech films in the 1920s. He made his directorial debut in 1930 with the film "The Night Before the Trial". Sviták went on to direct over a dozen films in his short career, including "The Sinful Village" (1934), "A Heart in Winter" (1936), and "The Merry Wives" (1944).

Sviták's films often dealt with social and political issues, and he was known for his sharp critiques of Czech society. Despite this, he was able to continue making films throughout World War II, but his career was cut short when he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944. He was eventually transported to the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, where he died in 1945.
