Erwin Schulhoff was born in the Jewish quarter of Prague and showed a remarkable musical talent from an early age. He was a student of the Czech composer and pedagogue Augustín Šolc and later studied with Max Reger in Leipzig. Schulhoff's music was influenced by a wide range of styles including jazz, Dadaism, Futurism, and Expressionism.

In addition to his work as a composer, Schulhoff was a talented pianist and enjoyed a successful career performing throughout Europe. However, his life and career were cut short by the rise of Nazi Germany.
