Gabriel Axel

Gabriel Axel (April 18, 1918 Aarhus-February 9, 2014 Bagsværd) a.k.a. Gabriel Axel Mørch was a Danish film director, screenwriter, actor, film producer, writer and television director. He had one child, Karin Mørch.

He began his career in Danish theater as an actor and director before transitioning to film in the 1950s. Axel went on to direct more than 20 films in his career, including the critically acclaimed and Academy Award-winning film Babette's Feast (1987), which he adapted from a short story by Karen Blixen. The film won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Axel's other notable works include Prince of Jutland (1994) and The Witching Hour (1968). In addition to film, Axel also worked in television, directing multiple episodes of the popular Danish television series Matador. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 95.
