Sylvain Poons

He was born in a family of performers and started singing from a young age. In 1919, he made his debut on stage in the revue "De Kleine Parade" at the Theater Tuschinski in Amsterdam. Poons was also a prolific actor, appearing in several films and TV shows throughout his career. He became popular for his chansons and played a crucial role in the development of Dutch-language popular music. Poons' most famous songs include "Als Je Voor Een Dubbeltje Geboren Bent", "Tulpen Uit Amsterdam", and "Mensch Durf Te Leven". Tulpen Uit Amsterdam was a major hit in the Netherlands and other countries, making Poons a national icon. In 1980, he received the Edison Award for his contribution to Dutch music. Tersteeg was also a member of the Resistance during World War II and was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944, spending the remainder of the war in a Nazi concentration camp.
