Van der Linden was a renowned keyboardist, composer, and founder of the famous Dutch progressive rock bands Ekseption and Trace. He was known for his virtuosity on the Hammond organ and his unique arrangements of classical music.

Van der Linden began his music career as a classical pianist, but his interest in jazz and rock led him to form Ekseption in 1967. The band achieved international success with their fusion of classical and rock music, and Van der Linden's keyboard skills were a key part of their sound.

After leaving Ekseption, Van der Linden formed Trace in 1974, which released three albums, including the critically acclaimed “Trace” and “Birds”. Apart from his work with these two bands, Van der Linden also composed and recorded several solo albums.
