Alice Guy-Blaché

Alice Guy-Blaché (July 1, 1873 Saint-Mandé-March 24, 1968 Wayne) otherwise known as Alice Guy-Blache, Alice Blaché, Alice Guy or Alice Guy Blaché was a French film director, film producer, filmmaker, screenwriter, actor and cinematographer. She had two children, Simone Blache and Reginald Blache.

Alice Guy-Blaché is considered as the first female filmmaker in the history of cinema. She started her career in the film industry in 1894 as a secretary for Léon Gaumont of Gaumont Studios. Later on, she experimented in directing short films herself, becoming the first female to direct a film. Notably, she wrote, directed and produced over a thousand films most of which are considered lost. Some of these films include, The Cabbage Fairy (1896), A Fool and His Money (1912) and The Ocean Waif (1916). She also introduced the use of synchronized sound and color tinting in her films before they became widely used in the industry. In addition to her notable contributions in the film industry, she was also an advocate for gender equality in the workplace. Alice Guy-Blaché is remembered as a pioneer in the film industry who opened the doors for future generations of female directors and producers.
