She later returned to France and continued to act in French movies. Darvi's personal life was tumultuous, and she had several marriages, including one to Wall Street financier, James Burnham. Rita Jolivet was born in Paris, France in 1890. She was the daughter of French composer André Jolivet and grew up in a family of artists. As a child, she began performing on stage and later attended drama school in Paris. In 1913, she moved to the United States and began her career on Broadway. She also appeared in several silent films and became known for her dramatic acting style.

During World War I, Jolivet returned to France and became a nurse for the Red Cross. She was captured by German forces and held as a prisoner of war for several months before being released. After the war, she returned to acting and toured Europe and the United States with her own theatre company.

Jolivet was also a writer and authored several books, including a memoir about her experiences as a prisoner of war. She was married twice, first to Italian count Guido de Cippico and later to American actor William Courtenay.
