He was born in Tbilisi, Georgia during the Soviet era, and is renowned for his contributions to the film industry. In 1956, he graduated from the Russian State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow, and then went on to direct and write several award-winning films, including "The White Caravan" and "The Chronicle of a Day". Erlom was awarded the Shota Rustaveli State Prize in 1993 for his contributions to cinema. In addition to his work in the industry, he was also an accomplished theater actor and director.
