Michael Wieck

Michael Wieck (July 19, 1928 Königsberg-) is a German writer.

Michael Wieck is a German writer who is best known for his memoir "A Childhood Under Hitler and Stalin: Memoirs of a ‘Certified’ Jew". He was born on July 19, 1928 in Königsberg and is of Jewish origin. During World War II, he was sent along with his mother to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. After they were liberated in 1945, Wieck and his mother moved to the Soviet occupation zone in Germany where they lived in poverty. He studied music in Weimar and later became a concert pianist. In addition to his memoir, Wieck has also written several novels and short stories.

Wieck's initial success as a concert pianist was ultimately halted by a hand injury, forcing him to abandon his musical career. He then turned to writing as his new profession. In addition to his memoir, which was first published in 1989, Wieck has also penned several other books including "Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage", "The Bridge of the Golden Horn", and "The Sandglass". Wieck's literary works often explore themes of personal identity, cultural displacement, and the traumas inflicted by war and persecution. Wieck has been recognized for his literary contributions with several awards, including the Geschwister-Scholl-Preis and the Heinrich-Mann-Preis.
