Jacobo Árbenz

Jacobo Árbenz (September 14, 1913 Quetzaltenango-January 27, 1971 Mexico) also known as Jacobo Arbenz Guzman or Colonel Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán was a Guatemalan politician. He had one child, Jacobo Arbenz Villanova.

Árbenz was a former military officer who served as the 25th President of Guatemala from 1951 to 1954. He was a key figure in the Guatemalan Revolution, which aimed to empower the country's poor majority and reduce the influence of foreign corporations in the country.

During his presidency, Árbenz implemented several progressive policies aimed at land reform and nationalization of the country's resources. He expropriated land owned by the United Fruit Company, a major American corporation, and distributed it to landless peasants. However, this move angered the US government, which saw it as a threat to their economic interests in the region.

In 1954, the US government supported a coup against Árbenz, which led to his ouster and the installation of a military dictatorship. Árbenz fled to Mexico, where he was granted asylum. He remained in Mexico until his death in 1971.

Árbenz's legacy remains controversial in Guatemala and the wider region. Some view him as a champion of democracy and social justice, while others view him as a communist sympathizer who threatened US interests in the region.
