Rajalakshmi began her career in the film industry as an actor in the early 1930s. She acted in over 60 films in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi languages. She was well known for her roles in films such as "Sati Sulochana" and "Bhakta Kuchela." In 1940, she made her directorial debut with the film "Miss Malini," which was produced by her husband, M. Kunchacko.

Rajalakshmi went on to direct several successful films, including "Vasanthasena," "Pavalakkodi," and "Avvaiyar."
