McCourt is best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir, Angela's Ashes. The book chronicles his childhood growing up in poverty in Limerick, Ireland. McCourt's family immigrated to the United States when he was a young adult, and he worked a variety of jobs throughout his life, including as a teacher in New York City schools. McCourt continued to write and publish several other books throughout his life, including 'Tis and Teacher Man. He also worked as an actor and served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
