George Tarr

George Tarr (September 22, 1881 Sydney-January 7, 1968 Milford, New Zealand) otherwise known as George Herrmann Tarr or Tarr was a New Zealand actor, film director, theatre manager, scenic artist and film producer.

He began his career as an actor in Australia before moving to New Zealand and co-founding the professional theatre company, the Troupers in 1907. Tarr was also involved in directing plays for the company and designing the scenery. In 1912, he made his way to Hollywood, where he began working as an extra.

Tarr's talent eventually led him to work as a director, producer, and actor in the film industry. He directed his first movie, "The Romance of Sunshine Alley," in 1914. He went on to direct numerous silent movies in Hollywood before moving back to New Zealand in 1924 to start his own film company.

In addition to his work in the film industry, Tarr was also active in the New Zealand theatre scene, managing several companies and performing as an actor. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1960 New Year Honours.

Today, Tarr is remembered as a pioneer of New Zealand cinema and a significant figure in early Hollywood film-making. His contributions to the arts in both countries helped pave the way for future generations of actors, directors, and producers.
