Pat Hanna

Pat Hanna (March 18, 1888 Whitianga-October 24, 1973 Ampthill) also known as George Patrick Hanna was a New Zealand screenwriter, film producer, film director and actor. He had two children, Ian Hanna and Pattie Hanna.

In 1913, Pat Hanna began his acting career in Australia before founding his own theatrical troupe which later on became the basis of his successful wartime concert party, Diggers. Throughout World War I and World War II, Hanna toured with the Diggers entertaining troops overseas, including in Egypt, France and Germany.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Hanna began producing and directing films, starting with The Breaking of the Drought in 1920. He went on to produce and direct several successful films, including the popular comedy Dad Rudd, MP. Hanna also wrote scripts for a number of his films, and is credited with discovering the Australian actor Chips Rafferty.

Hanna continued to act on stage and screen throughout his career, with over 40 film credits to his name. He also worked in radio, producing and performing in his own shows. In 1957, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his services to entertainment.

Outside of his professional life, Hanna was known for his passion for fishing and yachting, and he served as Commodore of the Royal Queensland Yacht Club. He passed away in Ampthill, England in 1973, aged 85.
