Sergei Bodrov

Sergei Bodrov (June 28, 1948 Khabarovsk-) a.k.a. Sergey Vladimirovich Bodrov, Sergey Bodrov, Sergej Bodrow, Sergey Bodrov Sr. or Sergei Vladimirovich Bodrov is a Russian film director, film producer, screenwriter and actor. His children are called Sergei Bodrov, Jr. and Asia Bodrova.

Sergei Bodrov got his start as an actor in the 1970s, appearing in numerous Soviet films. In the 1990s, he started to transition into directing and quickly became one of Russia's most acclaimed filmmakers. He directed the critically acclaimed films "Brother" and "Brother 2," which became instant classics in Russian cinema. He also directed "Prisoner of the Mountains," which was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 68th Academy Awards.

Bodrov tragically died in 2002 while filming "The Messenger" in the Caucasus mountains. His son, Sergei Bodrov Jr., who was also an actor and filmmaker, died in the same location in an avalanche in 2002. Baryshnikov began his ballet career in 1960, joining the Vaganova Ballet School in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). He joined the Kirov Ballet (now Mariinsky Ballet) in 1967 and quickly rose to become the company's principal dancer. In 1974, he defected to Canada while on tour with the Kirov Ballet and later moved to the United States.

Baryshnikov went on to dance with the American Ballet Theatre and the New York City Ballet. He also worked as a choreographer and director, founding the White Oak Dance Project in 1990. Baryshnikov has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the arts, including a Kennedy Center Honor in 2000 and the National Medal of Arts in 2017.
