Michael Chekhov

Michael Chekhov (August 29, 1891 Saint Petersburg-September 30, 1955 Beverly Hills) also known as Mikhail Aleksandrovich Chekhov, Mikhail Chekhov, Michael Tschechow, Misha or Mikhail Aleksandrovich "Michael" Chekhov was a Russian actor, film director, author, theatre director and teacher. He had one child, Ada Tschechowa.

Chekhov was the nephew of famous playwright Anton Chekhov and he himself had a prolific career in the arts. He starred in several silent films in Germany before moving to the United States to work in Hollywood during the 1940s. Chekhov also founded his own studio, The Chekhov Theatre School, which trained actors in his unique acting technique known as the "Psychological Gesture."

In addition to his work in film and theater, Chekhov was also a published author. His book, "To the Actor: On the Technique of Acting," is still considered a classic in the field of acting and is required reading in many drama schools.

Chekhov's unique approach to acting emphasized imagination and physicality, and he believed that an actor must have a deep understanding of psychology and symbolism in order to fully bring a character to life on stage or screen. He continued to teach and direct plays until his death in 1955 at the age of 64.
