He is best known for his work as a production designer and art director in Hollywood during the 1940s and 1950s, where he worked on several famous films including The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The Colossus of New York, and The Bad Seed.

Lourié was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, which was then part of the Russian Empire. He trained in Paris as an artist before immigrating to the United States in 1937.
