Arkan was not just any ordinary soldier, he was widely known for his involvement in paramilitary forces during the Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s. He formed the Serbian nationalist paramilitary group known as the "Serb Volunteer Guard" or the "Tigers" which was responsible for committing multiple war crimes and atrocities during the wars. Arkan was indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for his war crimes but was killed before he could stand trial.

Arkan's personal life was just as tumultuous as his role in the armed conflicts. He was married four times and had several affairs. He fathered at least ten children with six different women. His most high-profile relationship was with Serbian turbo-folk singer Ceca, whom he married in 1995. The two remained together until Arkan's death in 2000.

Despite his notorious reputation, Arkan was also involved in politics and even founded his own political party, the Serbian Unity Party. He was elected to the Serbian parliament in 1991 and was later appointed as the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs in the government of Serbia under a controversial mandate.

He died as a result of murder.
