Steve Tesich

Steve Tesich (September 29, 1942 Užice-July 1, 1996 Sydney) a.k.a. Stojan Tešić, Stojan Tesich or Stojan Stiv Tešić was a Serbian writer, playwright and screenwriter.

Tesich emigrated to the United States in 1957 and settled in East Chicago, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Russian literature in 1965, and then went on to attend Columbia University's School of the Arts, where he received a degree in playwriting. Tesich is best known for his Academy Award-winning screenplay for the film Breaking Away, a coming-of-age story inspired by his own experiences as an immigrant in the Midwest. He also wrote the screenplays for other critically acclaimed films such as Four Friends, Eyewitness, and American Flyers, as well as the stage play Division Street. In addition to his work in film and theater, Tesich was a regular contributor to magazines such as Esquire and Rolling Stone, and wrote a novel titled Summer Crossing.

He died in myocardial infarction.
