John Pickersgill Rodger was a Singaporean businessman, lawyer and politician who became famous for his contributions towards the development of banking in Singapore. He was educated in England and went on to become a successful lawyer, practicing in London and later in Singapore. In 1888, he co-founded the Mercantile Bank of India, London and China, which later became part of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC). Rodger was also an elected member of the Singapore Legislative Council and played an important role in the development of Singapore as a British colony. In addition, he was a philanthropist and contributed generously to charitable causes throughout his life.
