He rose to international fame with his 2012 documentary "Searching for Sugar Man", which won numerous awards including an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The film tells the story of Sixto Rodriguez, an American musician who became a folk hero in South Africa during the apartheid era despite being virtually unknown in his own country.

Bendjelloul started his career as a child actor in Sweden and later worked as a TV host and foreign correspondent for Swedish public television.
