Bergman starred in a number of classic Hollywood films, including "Casablanca," "Notorious," and "Gaslight," for which she won her first Academy Award for Best Actress. She also worked extensively in European films, most notably with Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini, with whom she had a scandalous affair that caused controversy in the United States. Later in her career, Bergman helped to found the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and continued to act in film and television until her death from breast cancer in 1982.
