Sabahattin Ali

Sabahattin Ali (February 25, 1907 Ardino-April 2, 1948 Kırklareli) otherwise known as Sebahattin Ali was a Turkish writer, author, poet and journalist. He had one child, Filiz Ali.

Sabahattin Ali was born in Ardino, a small town in the Ottoman Empire, which is now modern-day Bulgaria. He spent most of his childhood in Edirne, in western Turkey. Ali attended high school in Istanbul and later went on to study literature and philosophy at Ankara University. After graduation, he worked as a teacher for a brief period before he started his career as a journalist.

Ali's works, which are characterized by their political and social criticism, gained him popularity among leftist circles in Turkey. His most famous novel, "Madonna in a Fur Coat" (Turkish: "Kürk Mantolu Madonna"), has been translated into over 20 languages and is considered a classic of modern Turkish literature. The novel tells the story of a young Turkish man who falls in love with a German woman in 1920s Berlin.

In addition to his writing, Sabahattin Ali was active in politics and was a member of the Turkish Communist Party.
