Jannings was one of the most renowned actors of silent and early sound films, renowned for his powerful performances and expressive technique, which earned him worldwide recognition. He appeared in dozens of German and American films throughout his career and he was the first actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor, in recognition of his performances in the films "The Last Command" (1928) and "The Way of All Flesh" (1927). Jannings' career began in 1914, and he was active until his death in 1950. In addition to his work in film, Jannings was also a theater actor, and he had a reputation as a gifted stage performer. Despite his many accomplishments, Jannings was controversial due to his association with the Nazi Party, and his legacy has become a subject of debate in recent years.
