Maria Cardinal (March 9, 1929 Algiers-May 9, 2001 Valréas) also known as Marie. Cardinal, Simone Odette Maria Theresa Cardinal, Maria CARDINAL or Marie Cardinal was an Algerian screenwriter, actor and writer. Her children are Alice Ronfard, Benedict Ronfard and Benedict Ronfard.

Maria Cardinal was born and raised in Algiers, Algeria. She moved to Paris at 16 years old to study literature and theater. She began her career as an actor and eventually started writing screenplays for French television. She gained literary recognition for her memoir, "The Words to Say It," in which she discusses her own experiences with psychoanalysis and sexual abuse. Her writing often explored themes such as mental illness, trauma, and identity. Cardinal's work was widely translated and awarded, including the Prix des libraires and the Grand Prix de littérature de la SGDL. She passed away in 2001 at the age of 72.
