Gunn started his career in theater, where he wrote and directed several plays. He then made his way to Hollywood, where he worked as an actor in films such as "The Landlord" and "Ganja & Hess." However, he is perhaps most well-known for his work as a filmmaker, having written and directed several critically acclaimed independent films such as "Stop" and the controversial art-house horror film "Ganja & Hess."

Gunn was also a successful novelist, with works such as "All the Rest Have Died" and "Rhyme Sonnet." Despite his contributions to the arts, Gunn faced many challenges throughout his career due to racism and discrimination. Despite this, he continued to push forward and create groundbreaking works until his untimely death in 1989 at the age of 54.
