Richard Oswald

Richard Oswald (November 5, 1880 Vienna-September 11, 1963 Düsseldorf) a.k.a. Richard W. Ornstein was an Austrian film director, film producer, screenwriter and actor. He had two children, Ruth Oswald and Gerd Oswald.

Oswald began his career in the film industry as a screenwriter and actor before directing his first film in 1916. He quickly gained a reputation for being a skilled director and became known for his work in silent films. In the 1920s, he directed a number of successful films in Germany, including the Expressionist horror film "Unheimliche Geschichten" (1919) and the tragic drama "Die Ehe der Hedda Olsen" (1921).

In 1922, Oswald moved to Hollywood and began working for Universal Pictures. One of his most successful American films was "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1923) starring Lon Chaney. After several years in Hollywood, Oswald returned to Germany in 1931 and continued his directing career there.

During World War II, Oswald remained in Germany and continued to make films. Although some of his films during this period were propaganda films for the Nazi regime, his later work showed a more critical attitude towards the National Socialist government.

After the war, Oswald was banned by the Allied authorities from working in the film industry for a period of time. He was eventually allowed to resume his directing career and made several films in West Germany in the 1950s and 1960s.

Throughout his career, Oswald directed over 100 films and wrote numerous screenplays. He died in Düsseldorf in 1963 at the age of 82.
