William Bertram (January 19, 1880 Walkerton, Ontario-May 1, 1933 Los Angeles) also known as William Bertrum, Bill Bertram, Wm. Bertram or Benjamin Switzer was a Canadian film director and actor.
He began his career as a stage actor in Canada before moving to Hollywood in the early 1910s. Bertram appeared in over 150 films, often playing tough guys or villains. He also directed more than 50 films, mostly in the silent era, including the 1919 film "The Phantom Honeymoon" and the 1920 film "The Taming of the Shrew," which starred Mary Pickford. Bertram was known for his innovative camera work and use of special effects. He was also one of the early advocates of synchronized sound in film. In addition to his work in film, Bertram was a renowned collector of rare books and manuscripts. He died in 1933 in Los Angeles at the age of 53.
