He is best known for his novel "La Vorágine" (The Vortex), which is considered a masterpiece of Latin American literature. Rivera was also a staunch supporter of the rights of indigenous people and environmental conservation, and his work often reflected those concerns. In addition to his literary and political work, he practiced law and served as a diplomat in several Latin American countries. Despite his early success as a writer, Rivera struggled with depression and financial difficulties throughout his life. He ultimately died by suicide in New York City at the age of 40.

Diana Turbay
Diana Turbay (March 9, 1950 Bogotá-January 25, 1991 Medellín) was a Colombian journalist.
Turbay was known for her work as a television news anchor and investigative journalist. She was the founder and director of the news magazine "Cripton" and worked for various media outlets including El Espectador and Noticiero Nacional. Turbay's career was marked by her outspokenness regarding political corruption, drug trafficking and human rights abuses in Colombia. She was famously kidnapped by the Medellín Cartel while investigating a story on the illegal drug trade. Despite negotiations between the Colombian government and the cartels, Turbay and six others were killed in a botched rescue attempt by the security forces. Turbay's legacy as a courageous and dedicated journalist was cemented by her tragic death, and she remains a symbol of press freedom and the importance of investigative journalism in Colombia.
