He was known as "Jabón" which translates to "Soap" due to his addiction to cleanliness. Varela was a drug lord and considered to be one of the top drug traffickers in Colombia during his time. He was the leader of the Norte del Valle Cartel, one of the most powerful drug cartels in Colombia, and operated the drug trade in several countries. He was involved in smuggling cocaine into the United States and Europe and was wanted by several law enforcement agencies. In 2004, he was arrested in Venezuela but managed to escape and went into hiding. He was eventually found and killed in a hotel room in Venezuela in 2008. Despite his criminal activities, Varela was also known for his charitable work in his hometown and was seen as a hero by some in his community.
