Chavela Vargas (April 17, 1919 San Joaquín de Flores-August 5, 2012 Cuernavaca) also known as Chabela Vargas, Vargas, Chavela, Isabel Vargas Lizano or María Isabel Anita Carmen de Jesús was a Costa Rican actor, singer-songwriter and singer.

Her discography includes: EL PAIS - Col. Universo Latino Vol. 2, Live at Carnegie Hall, Antología, Chavela Vargas, La Llorona, Cupaima, Soledad, 40 Grandes Canciones, Chavela Vargas and 1973. Genres she performed include Ranchera.

Chavela Vargas was known for her soulful and emotional performances, often accompanied by her signature guitar-playing. She is especially known for her interpretations of Mexican ranchera music, and became an iconic figure in Mexican popular culture. She was a close friend and collaborator with the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, and is noted for her openness about her sexuality as a lesbian in a time when it was not widely accepted. In 2007, she was awarded the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and continued to perform and record music up until her death in 2012 at the age of 93.
