He is best known for his composition "Guantanamera", which has become one of the most popular songs in the world, covered by countless artists in numerous languages. Fernandez began his career as a singer on the radio in the 1930s and went on to become a prolific songwriter, composing over 200 songs. In addition to "Guantanamera", some of his other notable compositions include "La Bayamesa", "Elige Tu Que Canto Yo", and "El Tren de Yaguaramas".
