Bebo Valdés

Bebo Valdés (October 9, 1918 Quivicán-March 22, 2013 Stockholm) also known as Bebo Valdes, Valdés, Bebo, Dionisio Ramón Emilio Valdés Amaro, Ramón Emilio Valdés Amaro, Bebo, Bebo Valdez or Valdez, Bebo was a Cuban pianist, composer, bandleader and music arranger. He had seven children, Chucho Valdés, , Miriam Valdés, Raul Valdés, Ramón Valdés, Raymond Valdés and Rickard Valdés.

Bebo Valdés was born in Quivicán, Cuba and began his career as a pianist in the nightclubs of Havana. In the 1940s and 50s, he became a key figure in the golden age of Cuban music, playing in popular bands such as Arcaño y sus Maravillas and the Tropicana Orchestra. He later formed his own band, Sabor de Cuba, which toured extensively in Latin America and Europe.

In the 1960s, Valdés moved to Sweden and took a break from music to work as a hotel manager. However, he returned to recording and performing in the 1990s, collaborating with artists such as Cachao, Paquito D'Rivera, and Israel "Cachao" López. He also formed a musical partnership with his son, the renowned jazz pianist Chucho Valdés, and together they recorded several albums including "Juntos Para Siempre" and "Chucho & Bebo."

Throughout his career, Bebo Valdés was known for his virtuosic piano playing and his innovative arrangements that blended Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz and classical music. He was the recipient of numerous awards including a Grammy for his album "Lágrimas Negras" with flamenco singer Diego El Cigala. Valdés remained active in the music scene until his death in 2013 at the age of 94 in Stockholm, Sweden.
