Eduard Nápravník

Eduard Nápravník (August 24, 1893 Czech Republic-November 23, 1916 Saint Petersburg) a.k.a. Eduard Napravnik was a Czech composer and conductor.

Eduard Nápravník was born on August 24, 1855, in Bohemia, which was then a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire and is now the Czech Republic. He began his musical studies in Prague and later continued his education in Vienna. In 1869, he moved to Saint Petersburg where he joined the Mariinsky Theatre as a rehearsal pianist. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the theatre's chief conductor in 1869.

During his long tenure as the chief conductor, Eduard Nápravník conducted the premieres of many famous operas by Russian composers, including Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades, as well as Modest Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov. He was also a prolific composer and wrote several operas, ballets, and symphonies.

In addition to his work at the Mariinsky Theatre, Nápravník was a professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and trained generations of Russian musicians. He died on November 23, 1916, in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and was buried at the Smolensk Cemetery in that city.
