Leestemaker was born in Hilversum, Netherlands and attended the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. He later moved to the United States and lived and worked in New York City, where he was active in the downtown art scene in the 1980s. He worked as an actor in the theater and independent films, appearing in productions Off-Broadway and in downtown theater companies.
As a painter, Leestemaker is known for his abstract expressionist style, characterized by bold brushstrokes and bright colors. His work has been exhibited in galleries in the United States and Europe, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
