Throughout his career, Ivens was known for his innovative and socially relevant documentaries, which often tackled issues such as labor rights, anti-fascism, and the effects of war. He worked on over 50 films, including the classics "Rain" (1929), "The Spanish Earth" (1937), and "Power and the Land" (1940).

Ivens was also a dedicated communist and political activist, and his films often reflected his beliefs. In 1945, he was a founding member of the World Congress of Intellectuals for Peace, and later served as president of the Dutch Association of Film Artists and Technicians.
