George Sluizer
George Sluizer (June 25, 1932 Paris-September 20, 2014 Amsterdam) was a Dutch screenwriter, film director, writer, film producer, television director and actor.
Sluizer is best known for his work in the thriller genre. He directed the 1988 film "Spoorloos" (The Vanishing), which became a critical and commercial success both in Europe and the United States. Based on the novel "The Golden Egg" by Tim Krabbé, the film tells the story of a man who obsessively searches for his girlfriend after she disappears during a rest stop while they are on vacation.
In addition to "Spoorloos," Sluizer directed a number of other feature films, including "Red Desert Penitentiary" and "Dark Blood". He also made a handful of documentaries and worked in television, directing episodes of the Dutch series "Floris" and "Herenstraat 10".
Despite his accomplishments as a filmmaker, Sluizer's life was not without its challenges. He struggled with health issues, including heart and lung problems, and was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2006. He also faced financial difficulties after a disastrous attempt to complete and release "Dark Blood," which had been stalled due to the untimely death of its star, River Phoenix.
Sluizer passed away in Amsterdam in September 2014 at the age of 82. His legacy as a filmmaker lives on through his influential works, including "Spoorloos," which has since been remade and adapted for television.
