Hans Vonk was born in Amsterdam in 1942, and began playing the violin as a child. He studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory and the Juilliard School in New York, where he later became a teacher. Vonk began his career as a conductor in the Netherlands, and went on to conduct orchestras around the world, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Dresden Staatskapelle.

Vonk was known for his precise and controlled conducting style, as well as his ability to get the best out of the musicians he worked with. He also had a reputation for championing contemporary composers, and conducted premieres of works by John Adams, Philip Glass, and others.
