Al-Gammal was born in Damietta, Egypt in 1927. He graduated from Cairo University with a degree in accounting and worked as an accountant in various companies before being recruited by the Egyptian intelligence agency. He became a prominent spy for Egypt during the 1950s and 60s, known for his successful infiltration of Israeli intelligence and for providing crucial information during the Suez Crisis.
