Sydney Carter was an English poet, songwriter, and folk musician. He is best known for composing the popular hymn "Lord of the Dance," which has been recorded by numerous artists and is widely sung in churches around the world. Carter was a pacifist and conscientious objector during World War II and worked as a teacher and social worker throughout his life. He was also a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and often incorporated themes of social justice and spirituality into his music. In addition to "Lord of the Dance," some of his other well-known songs include "Julian of Norwich," "The Crow on the Cradle," and "One More Step Along the World I Go."
Sydney Carter was born on May 6, 1915, in Camden Town, London, England. He grew up in a musical family and started writing songs and playing the guitar from a young age. He studied at Oxford University and later worked as a teacher and social worker in London, where he used his music and poetry to help disadvantaged and marginalized communities.
