He was a member of the popular folk rock band Lindisfarne, which formed in 1968. Fenson joined the band in 1971, replacing original bassist Ray Jackson. Fenson played on several of Lindisfarne's most well-known songs, including "Meet Me on the Corner" and "Lady Eleanor." He left the band in the mid-1970s, but later rejoined for a brief period in the 1990s. In addition to his work with Lindisfarne, Fenson has also played with other notable musicians, such as Ian Matthews and Jack the Lad.
