Princess Ijigayehu Amha Selassie
Princess Ijigayehu Amha Selassie (September 4, 1934 Dessie-April 5, 1977 Addis Ababa) was an Ethiopian personality.
She was the daughter of Emperor Haile Selassie, Ethiopia's last sovereign monarch. She was the last surviving child of Haile Selassie and his wife, Empress Menen Asfaw. Princess Ijigayehu was described as a very private and reserved person, and although she was a member of the Imperial family, she largely stayed out of the public spotlight.
In her later years, she suffered from mental illness and was reportedly under the care of her mother, Empress Menen. Princess Ijigayehu passed away at the age of 42 due to an illness in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She was buried in the crypt at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa, where the majority of the Ethiopian Royal Family is interred.
Despite her desire to stay out of the public eye, Princess Ijigayehu was known to be an accomplished musician, playing the piano and singing. She was also fluent in English, French, and Amharic. In her youth, she attended several prestigious schools in Switzerland, including the Ecole des Nations in Geneva and the Institut Le Rosey. She was known for her intelligence and her unwavering loyalty to her father, the Emperor. During the Italian occupation of Ethiopia, Princess Ijigayehu and her family were forced into exile, living in various locations including England, Sudan, and Jerusalem. Despite the hardships she faced throughout her life, Princess Ijigayehu remained steadfast in her devotion to her family and her country.
