He was born in the town of Ankober, which was then the capital of Ethiopia. Afevork Ghevre Jesus was the son of a prominent family and had a privileged upbringing, which allowed him to receive a Western-style education. He is considered one of the founding fathers of modern Ethiopian literature and is best known for his collection of short stories, entitled "Märchen und Erzählungen aus Äthiopien" (Tales and Stories from Ethiopia), which was published in German in 1909. Afevork Ghevre Jesus was not only a writer, but also a diplomat and military officer. He served as Ethiopia's minister of war and foreign affairs, and was also appointed as the country's ambassador to Germany, France and the United Kingdom. He was instrumental in negotiating the Treaty of Addis Ababa, which brought an end to the First Italo-Ethiopian War in 1896. Afevork Ghevre Jesus was a champion of Ethiopian culture and language, and used his writing to promote Ethiopian identity and pride.
