Laughlin is best known for his portrayal of the character Billy Jack in the film series of the same name, which he also wrote, directed, and produced. The films dealt with various social and political issues, including racism, corruption, and environmentalism.
In addition to his work in film, Laughlin was also a political activist and ran for president of the United States in 1992 and 2004, under his own political party, the "The Peace and Freedom Party." He was the founder and longtime artistic director of the Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carré in New Orleans, which is one of the oldest community theaters in the country. Fontelieu's career in the arts spanned over six decades, during which he directed, acted, and produced numerous plays in the New Orleans area. He was also a respected acting teacher, and many of his students went on to have successful careers in the entertainment industry. In addition to his work in the theater, Fontelieu was a decorated World War II veteran who served in the Army's 103rd Infantry Division in Europe. He received several medals and commendations for his service, including the Purple Heart. Fontelieu passed away in 2009 at the age of 86.
