In 1754, he joined David Garrick's company at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, where he became a leading actor. He also performed in Dublin, Ireland and Edinburgh, Scotland.

Holland was known for his versatility as an actor and was praised for his ability to perform both tragedy and comedy roles equally well. He was a member of the actor-manager movement, which allowed actors to take control of their own productions and have more creative control.

Despite his short career, Holland is remembered as one of the great actors of his time and his legacy lives on in the modern acting profession.
